Massachusetts PCA Consumers/Employers

  • What is the Massachusetts PCA Directory and RewardingWork.org?

The Massachusetts PCA Directory is a program of the Massachusetts PCA Workforce Council, developed and managed by Rewarding Work Resources, Inc., a nonprofit organization. The PCA directory assists Massachusetts elders, residents with disabilities of all ages, their families, and parents of children with disabilities in hiring their own PCA or direct care worker. PCA surrogates may also use the service.  The Massachusetts PCA Directory is available at www.RewardingWork.org.

  • Do I pay a fee to use the PCA Directory?

Massachusetts residents who participate in the MassHealth PCA program are eligible for free subscriptions to use the Directory. Simply enter your MassHealth number when registering to receive a free, 12-month subscription. Subscriptions are renewable each year as long as you continue to receive MassHealth PCA services.

Massachusetts families who receive services through the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) also are eligible for free, 12-month subscriptions. Subscriptions are renewable each year as long as you continue to receive DDS services. Contact your DDS office or Family Support Center for an Access Code.

Anyone may use the Directory to hire PCAs or Respite Workers. Simply register and purchase a subscription at www.RewardingWork.org. Paid subscriptions cost $10 for 1-month; $25 for 3-months; $50 for a 6-month subscription; and $90 for a 12-month subscription. You may also register for a 24-hour free trial. Free trial subscribers may view information about applicants but cannot contact them.

  • Why would I want to use the Directory?

It allows you, the consumer, to hire the support you need. There are thousands of PCAs and direct support workers throughout Massachusetts looking for work. They have the skills to assist you in living independently. The PCA Directory gives you choice and control in hiring PCAs whose experience and background match your needs.

  • How does it work?

The Massachusetts PCA Directory lets you choose from a wide group of potential employees. After you complete a short registration form, you may immediately begin searching for PCA applicants who best meet your needs. On the Search Our Applicants page, you will enter your zip code and the number of miles from your zip code you would like to search. You may select additional criteria to narrow the list to find exactly the person who matches your needs. You, as the employer, decide which applicants to contact and interview.

  • How do I post a job on the Job Board? Is there a fee?

Rewarding Work subscribers may post job listings on our Job Board free of charge. To post a job, log into your Rewarding Work account and complete the online Job Board form. You will receive an email confirming that your ad has been posted and your ad will run for 30 days. Job applicants who have completed an application with Rewarding Work will be able to apply to your position, and you may contact the candidates of your choice. You will receive applications by email, but your information remains confidential. For complete details, click here.

  • Have PCAs been screened?

No, PCA candidates listed on the Rewarding Work website have NOT been screened in any way and their backgrounds have NOT been checked. It is your responsibility as an employer to check references and backgrounds of people you may hire.

However, candidates have completed a thorough application, which should provide you with information that allows you to make an informed decision about whether or not you wish to contact them.

You may consider conducting a criminal background check on applicants before you hire them. The CORI program is FREE for elders 60+ and people with disabilities. Click here for information on the Massachusetts CORI.

You also should check the List of Excluded Individuals/Entities maintained by the Office of the Inspector General of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The list, established under a Congressional mandate to protect the health and welfare of the nation’s elderly and poor, prevents certain individuals and businesses from participating in Federally-funded health care programs.

  • How do I login to RewardingWork.org?

After you register, you will receive a password by email. The first time you use the password you will be asked to change it to one you can easily remember. You will need to use your username (email address) and password each time you login. There is a login box on every page of www.RewardingWork.org.

  • How can a PCA consumer without a computer access a list of PCA job candidates?

We encourage PCA consumers, when possible, to enlist the aid of friends, families, libraries or community centers for help accessing our online PCA Directory. Another good resource for assistance is the consumer’s PCM Agency, which can often conduct an online search for the consumer, and then mail the consumer a list of the search results.
