The Department of Veteran Affairs’ (VA) Caregiver Support Program (CSP) offers clinical services to caregivers of eligible and covered Veterans enrolled in the VA health care system. The program’s mission is to promote the health and well-being of family caregivers who care for our nation’s veterans, through education, resources, support, and services.
Do you know that if you are the primary caregiver for a veteran, you may be eligible for a monthly stipend and access to health insurance, among other benefits?
Here are highlights of the VA caregiver benefits program.
- The veteran must have a service-connected disability rating of 30% or higher.
- The veteran must require assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, etc.
- The veteran must receive regular care from a VA-authorized healthcare provider.
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must pass a background check.
- You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien.
If you meet all of the above criteria, you can start the application process by visiting the Veterans Affairs website and completing the online form. You will need to submit documentation such as the veteran's DD-214 form (if applicable) and medical records showing the veteran's service-connected disability rating. Once your application is complete, a VA representative will contact you to schedule an in-person assessment.
