Respite resources

We can help you find the right resource for your family!

Respite is planned or emergency care provided to a child or adult with special needs in order to provide temporary relief – or a short break – to family caregivers. Respite will give you a chance to step back and recharge.

Respite services can be beneficial, meaningful, and enjoyable to both the caregiver and the care receiver.  Studies shows that having respite is the family caregiver's most desired and needed service.

  • Family caregivers need to have sufficient and regular amounts of respite. Give careful thought to how you want to spend your respite time. Respite needs to be meaningful and purposeful for caregivers to fulfill their needs and plans, as well as safe and enjoyable for the care receiver.
  • Respite is most effective when combined with other services and assistance, but don't wait to take your break. You may also benefit from additional financial support, education/training, emotional and social support, and a sense of belonging with others.
  • Most importantly, respite will give you a chance to step back and recharge.

To assess your own need for respite and to ensure that you are making the most of your respite time, please utilize RESPITE SERVICES: Enhancing the Quality of Daily Life for Caregivers and Care Receivers

The Arizona Respite Locator offers a comprehensive and current list of people working in direct care who are ready to provide respite in a variety of settings. This registry will enable individuals and families throughout Arizona to easily access individual workers and other resources to provide the support you or your family member may need to remain living in your own home.

For additional information about family caregiving, visit the Arizona Caregiver Coalition, which was created to support you and your family. AZCaregiver.org offers support and help finding access to information, assistance, answers, new ideas and helpful options for you and your loved one.

You also may contact the statewide Arizona Caregiver Resource Line at 1-888-737-7494 or email CRL@AZCaregiver.net

Caregivers and others seeking assistance can call or email 24/7. Helpful trained caregiver advocate volunteers answer calls Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. If you call at other times, leave a message. Your call will be returned within one or two days.

Not sure if you’re a family caregiver? Take the AMA Caregiver Self-Assessment Questionnaire.
